Dr. Bruce Bowman

 

Bruce Bowman, DVM and his wife Nancy reside in rural Fishersville with their daughter Maggie and son Samuel.

Dr. . Bowman has been a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren and is a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren  where he sings in the choir, teaches Sunday School, and serves as a deacon. He graduated from Montevideo High School in 1969, then entered the U.S. Coast Guard from 1969-1973.  In the Coast Guard he was the radio operator for search and rescue cutters.  He then was the first mate on a yacht in the West Indies from 1973-1974. Dr. Bowman has also hiked the 2100 mile of Appalachian Trail.  He earned his Associates Degree in General Studies from Blue Ridge Community College in 1978, then worked as a mentor in an experimental education program at the Virginia Department of Corrections Juvenile Learning Center, Natural Bridge, VA. 1978-1980.  He attended Virginia Tech from 1980-1987 where he received his  Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science/minor is Agriculture Economics 1983 and his  Doctor of Veterinary Medicine 1987.

Immediately following graduation, Dr. Bowman was invited to join the teaching staff and worked as a clinical instructor in the ambulatory department at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM) training senior veterinary students in practical farm animal skills.  Commonwealth Veterinary Clinic was established  1988.

His organizational involvements include Fishersville Ruritans of Augusta County, The American Farm Bureau, Blue Ridge Veterinary Medical Association, The Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce.  Some of his other interests are sustainable agriculture, farm land preservation and animal health issues.

In his spare time, Dr. Bowman enjoys backpacking, bicycling, fishing, and bird watching.
