Mission Statement:

We strive to provide competent, up-to-date veterinary services in a professional and friendly atmosphere.  We believe that all animals should have a thorough physical examination prior to any type of medical treatment, including routine vaccinations.  This ensures that you have a healthy, happy pet.

For safety and health reasons, we respectfully request that you please refrain from smoking, that you keep your pet restrained on a leash or in an appropriate carrier while in the clinic, and that trained office personnel be allowed to hold and handle your pet during examinations.

History of the Clinic:

Commonwealth Veterinary Clinic, P.C. was founded in 1988 by Dr. Bruce M. Bowman, DVM.  The clinic was originally built in the early 1950’s by a husband and wife team of veterinarians, Dr. and Mrs. O.L. Boyd.  Mr. Boyd’s grandfather was a veterinarian on the eastern shores of Virginia and he encouraged his grandson to migrate to the Shenandoah Valley to follow a colony of Amish Mennonite farmers who had settled in nearby Stuarts Draft.  Mrs. Boyd was the first licensed female veterinarian in the state of Virginia!

Commonwealth Veterinary Clinic began as a predominantly mixed animal practice.  For many years, the farm animal activities demanded the most significant portion of Dr. Bowman’s attention.  As time passed, the number of small animal patients increased and more space became necessary.  A modern reception area, exam rooms, and doctors office suite was added in 1996.

The practice established an affiliation as a shareholder with a nearby, fully staffed, after-hours small animal emergency care center in 1998.  The practice then qualified for the prestigious national American Animal Hospital Association certification and recognition in 1999.

After working twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week for nine years, Dr. Bowman added a second associate Veterinarian, Dr. Leslie T. Brown, DVM, in 1997.  A third associate, Dr. Spencer A. Nice, DVM, joined the practice in 2004.  Currently, the three staff doctors rotate large animal emergency calls over weeknights, weekdays, and holidays.  Animals never schedule their sick times.

Payment Policy:

To keep the cost of veterinary services down, all payments are due at the time of service.  For your convenience, we accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.  Bills for hospitalized or boarded patients must be paid in full prior to the animal being discharged.  We also offer Care Credit as a method of payment.

An estimate of the charge for medical and surgical services can be provided upon request.  Please keep in mind that unexpected conditions or complications may alter the estimate that is provided.  All care and procedures are administered with your permission only.
